Compressing a JPG that's already compressed

Re-encoding a heavily compressed JPG adds new artefacts on top of old ones. Start from the highest-quality original you have.

Using PNG for photographs

PNG is lossless and large for photographic detail. Reserve it for flat graphics, screenshots and transparency; use JPG or WebP for photos.

Chasing the smallest possible file

Quality below ~60 introduces visible blotching on skin tones and gradients. Compare the preview at 100% zoom before committing.

Does compressing an image reduce its resolution?
No — compression changes how pixels are encoded, not how many there are. Use Resize if you also need smaller dimensions.
Will I be able to see the quality loss?
At quality 75–90 the difference is invisible to most people on a normal screen. Below ~60 you'll start to see soft blotching in gradients and skin tones.
Which output format should I choose?
WebP gives the smallest files at equal quality and is supported by all modern browsers. Pick JPG only if you need maximum compatibility with older software.
