Using it on busy or photographic backgrounds
This is a color-key tool — it removes a specific flat color, not arbitrary scenery. It won't cleanly separate a subject from a textured room or outdoor background; that needs AI-based segmentation.
Setting tolerance too high or too low
Too high and the cutout eats into the subject's edges or similarly-colored areas; too low and fragments of background remain. Nudge it gradually and check the preview at each step.
Skipping the feather setting
Zero feathering produces a hard, slightly jagged cutout edge that looks pasted-in. A small 1–3px feather softens the transition and looks far more natural.

Will this remove the background from any photo?
It works best on images shot against a single, even background color — studio product shots, ID photos, flat-color scans. For complex or photographic backgrounds, AI-based removal (on the roadmap) would be the better fit.
How is this different from AI background removal?
Color-key removal looks at pixel color and keys out matching shades — fast, predictable and fully local. AI removal segments the subject from any background using a trained model — more flexible but heavier to run.
What format should I export to so the transparency is preserved?
Export as PNG — it's the format that supports transparency in this tool. JPG would flatten the transparent areas to a solid color.
